In Response to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in 2024 (Message from President)

Jan 02 2024

For Students of Niigata University:

In Response to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in 2024 (Message from President)

The Noto Peninsula Earthquake in 2024 has caused extensive damage on the Sea of Japan side, mainly in Ishikawa, Toyama, and Niigata prefectures. There are concerns that further earthquakes and tsunamis may occur, so please continue to take precautions for your own safety. Please read Notices 1 and 2 below carefully, and take action on Requests 3 and 4.

Notice 1: Classes will resume on January 9

Regarding the earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024, the Emergency Response Headquarters meeting held on January 2, 2024, decided to open classes on January 9 as scheduled, for the following reasons:
1) No serious human casualties have been confirmed
2) No major damage has been confirmed to university buildings
3) In general, special precautions will be needed for about one week following the first event of an earthquake or tsunami.

Notice 2: Confirmation of damage to people and university buildings

We will continue our efforts to collect further information on the above. Depending on the situation, the decision on the date and time of the start of classes, etc., may change.
By the time classes begin on January 9, we will confirm the safety of the lecture rooms and laboratories.

Request 3: Restrictions on entry to buildings on campus

Until January 9, when classes will begin, please DO NOT enter university buildings without permission. If you need to enter, please make sure to consult your academic advisor in advance.
Regarding the use of the university’s facilities for extracurricular activities by clubs/circles starting January 5, the university will send a notification at a later date after confirming the safety of the facilities via the Academic Affairs Information System.

Request 4: Request for ANPIC Response

You may have received an email from ANPIC, the safety confirmation system, to your email address in the Academic Affairs Information System requesting to report your safety situation. 70 percent of the students have responded. If you have not yet responded, please respond immediately.

Please pay attention to future information from the university and stay safe.
