A group of Professor Meiji Honda of Niigata University (Faculty of Science) and the researchers of Mie University and Hokkaido University discovered the interhemispheric synchronization between the Arctic Oscillation and the Antarctic oscillation.
The Arctic oscillation induces cold winter and heat waves in Japan, and the Antarctic oscillation is related to the ozone hole.
This is the first report to suggest that frequent extreme weather events are related to the condition of the Antarctic far away from the Northern Hemisphere.
