Japan-Russia Joint Symposium on Educational and Scientific Development in Medicine 2018 was held from Friday, November 9 to Saturday, November 10 at the Italia Ken Niigata with Japan-Russia Medical Exchange Foundation as a co-organizer, as well as given support from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and Niigata Consortium for Japan Russia Medical Sciences and Educational Exchanges. The symposium had more than 150 attendees including approximately 60 Russian attendees.
At the beginning of the symposium, our President, Prof. Sugata Takahashi and Mr. Taro Nakayama, the President of Japan-Russia Medical Exchange Foundation delivered the opening remarks, followed by the special remarks delivered by Mr. Kazuhiko Hayashi, the Director for International Analysis, Higher Education Policy Planning Division, Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology – Japan (MEXT).

The symposium was composed of four sessions; "Japan-Russia Exchanges in Niigata University", "Medical Education", "Scientific Research and Medical Exchanges" and "Advanced Topics in the field of Oncology".
In our session "Japan-Russia Medical Exchange", considerable achievements, such as student exchange programs and collaborative research projects, were introduced and the presentation was given by the students who participated in the programs, which all were the part of "Re-Inventing Japan Project", adopted in 2014 initiated by MEXT.
Afterwards, the presentation on cutting-edge research was given by leading researchers from Japan and Russia, as well as the poster session was conducted introducing some of our efforts.
Furthermore, several corporations from Niigata presented their medical and nursing equipment at the exhibition booths set within the venue, proposed by Niigata Consortium for Japan Russia Medical Sciences and Education Exchanges, formed in collaboration with local government, research institutes, banks and companies in Niigata. The exhibition piqued the attendees' interest.

The symposium ended up being meaningful as it enabled the researchers to deepen their professional and technical knowledge, and not only universities from Japan and Russia but also the industry, government to interact with each other.
We will continue to further promote academic and student exchanges in the field of medical science along with other academic fields with Russia.
