A novel factor that promotes mitochondrial degradation through autophagy
November 18, 2020
Associate Professor Tomoyuki Fukuda and Professor Tomotake Kanki of the Department of Cellular Physiology, Niigata University Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences have demonstrated that a mitochondrial protein called Atg43 promotes mitochondrial degradation through autophagy (mitophagy). Mitophagy maintains cellular integrity by degrading dysfunctional mitochondria. The results of the present study should help elucidate a part of the molecular mechanism of mitophagy and its roles in cells and lead to the prevention and treatment of various diseases caused by mitochondrial dysfunction.
