Disaster Prevention Class for International Students Held

Nov 20 2025

On November 14, a “Disaster Prevention Class for International Students” was held at the Advanced Education and Research Building on Ikarashi Campus. The purpose of the class was to help international students acquire knowledge about disaster preparedness, so they can live safely in Japan.

In light of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024, the theme was “Earthquakes.” More than 60 international students participated in the event. We welcomed Ms. Yuko Nagahama and Mr. Kazuhiro Komata from the Niigata Branch of the Japan Disaster Prevention Leaders Association as lecturers. They explained basic earthquake knowledge, the mechanism of emergency earthquake alerts, and how to use evacuation shelters in easy-to-understand Japanese.

Participants also learned practical preparedness skills through activities such as tasting alpha rice, assembling portable toilets, and setting up cardboard beds.

In addition, the Niigata City International Exchange Foundation introduced the “Multilingual Support Center for Disasters,” helping participants deepen their understanding of support systems during emergencies.

Feedback from participants included comments such as, “The content was very meaningful and useful for everyone,” and “I now have a better understanding of earthquakes and how to prepare for them.” The class provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the importance of preparedness and actions to take in the event of an earthquake.

Niigata University will continue to actively promote disaster-prevention education to create an environment where all students, including international students, can study with peace of mind.
