Niigata University held the Joint International Symposium for "The Cutting-edge of Sakeology and Oenology" co-hosted by Sakeology Center Niigata University (SCNU) and Niigata University Kariwa Village Advanced Agro-Biotechnology (KAAB) Research Center. On Friday, November 1, "SCNU the Second Symposium 2019" was held at the Library Hall on Ikarashi campus, followed by "10th KAAB Research Center Forum" held on Saturday, November 2 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Agriculture. Throughout two-day symposium, approximately 270 people participated including faculty, staff and students from Niigata University, people related to wine and sake as well as the general public.
On November 1, lectures were given in Session One on Oenology covering various wine production systems in France and the organic wine market. The lectures in Session Two were on Sakeology covering the improvement of sake metabolome through genomic study and the history and future of sake yeasts. After the lectures was a sake and wine tasting session where people tried organic wines and sakes and deepened their understanding of wine and sake.
On November 2, starting with a lecture on the concept of Sakeology, lectures followed: "Niigata Sake" and "Overview of Iwanohara Vineyard and the Challenge of Founder Zenbei Kawakami." The final lecture was "Statistics on French Wine Production and Marketing; Current State of Organic Wine."
