On Saturday, October 19, the 75th anniversary ceremony and celebration of Niigata University were held at the ANA Crowne Plaza Niigata. The ceremony was attended by approximately 450 guests from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), relevant institutions and companies in and outside of Niigata Prefecture, overseas partner universities, and the University’s alumni.
The commemorative ceremony, hosted by Niigata University Ambassador Ms. UGAZIN Yui, began with an opening remark from President USHIKI Tatsuo. It was followed by congratulatory speeches on behalf of the guests from Mr. ITO Gakuji, Director-General, Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) (proxy: Mr. MATSUZAKA Hiroshi, Strategist, Minister’s Secretariat , MEXT), Mr. HANAZUMI Hideyo, Governor, Niigata Prefecture (proxy: Mr. KASATORI Koichi, Vice Governor, Niigata Prefecture), Mr. NAKAHARA Yaichi, Mayor, Niigata City (proxy: Mr. IZAKI Noriyuki, Vice Mayor, Niigata City), Prof. JI Yong, President, Harbin Medical University, Dr. KURUVILLA Joseph, Professor & Registrar, Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, and Dr. LIU Leo Mian, Vice President, University of Technology Sydney.

The commemorative ceremony concluded with a festive performance by the Niigata University Orchestra.
Following the ceremony, a commemorative celebration was held, emceed by two Niigata University ambassadors, Ms. UGAZIN Yui, who hosted the ceremony, and Ms. YAMADA Ayano. It was also well attended.
After an opening address by the President, congratulatory speeches were given by Mr. NAGATA Kyosuke, President, Japan Association of National Universities (proxy: Ms. SASAKI Yasuko, Vice President, Japan Association of National Universities / President of Ochanomizu University) and Mr. USUKI Isato, President, Niigata University Alumni Association.
Afterward, the Niigata Furumachi Geigi (geishas in Furumachi, Niigata) performed a congratulatory dance, followed by a grand Kagamibiraki, a sake barrel opening ceremony, to pray for the further development of the University.
Then, Mr. GEJO Fumitake, former president of Niigata University, offered a toast.
Served at the celebration were dishes, such as omusubi (rice balls) made from Shindai (Niigata University) Koshihikari rice, and alcohols also associated with the University, including Rikka no Mori sake from the Sakeology Center and Shinsetsu Monogatari sake from the Field Center for Sustainable Agriculture attached to the Faculty of Agriculture.
During the celebration, a performance by the Niigata University Symphonic Band was given, making the festivities even more spectacular.
The event concluded on a high note with a speech by Mr. TAKAHASHI Sugata, former President of Niigata University, followed by a thank-you speech by Prof. SAKAMOTO Makoto, Executive Vice President of Niigata University.
